16:12.54 | rangergord | hi |
16:16.31 | rangergord | I'm completely new to embedded development. I have a board with a 1GHz ARM CPU and 512MB of RAM. It comes with a manufacturer-provided Busybox distro with a limited version of Qt (a set of high-level C++ libraries). I'm thinking 1GHz+512MB is a lot, so why don't I just install a regular Linux distro like Debian, and install the full Qt framework on it. What would the downsides be? |
16:18.15 | rangergord | like I said I've had zero exposure to embedded, maybe these specs aren't as good as I think...but at the same time, damn, I was using Windows XP on a computer with 128MB 10 years ago, and it did more than what I expect this device to do. |

18:09.28 | rangergord | does it actually matter? aren't the specs enough to decide? :) |

19:01.55 | mnemoc | rangergord: mostly only the SoC matters |
19:02.51 | mnemoc | imx53 in this case. you may want to look at http://imxcommunity.org/ |
19:11.25 | rangergord | what's SoC? |
19:12.35 | rangergord | System on Chip |
19:13.28 | rangergord | so do I need to worry about the IMX53 chip not handling a desktop distro? |
19:15.51 | rangergord | heh, I got my answer by googling imx53 benchmarks. Considering Freescale themselves use Ubuntu in their benchmarks, I think I'm safe :) |
