13:08.34TomWsorphin: wb
13:09.07chouimathi TomW
13:09.15TomW:)
13:10.30TomWI got blob to run on the webpal, it gets up to the command line.  Now to get it to execute my kernel..
13:10.55chouimatTomW: not bad
13:12.06TomWyeah, I'm not sure how this is going to work out, 1Meg of flash is still pretty small and blob is 8..12K larger than bootp..
13:15.04chouimatTomW: hmmm
13:19.31TomWchouimat: the flash chip is organized as: 16k/8k/8k/32k then 15 64k sectors.  If you want to keep the same type of fucntionality as we have with the blob of the tuxscreen, it is going to be interesting to shove: blob+param+romdisk+kernel inside of 1Meg and have them fall within sectored areas.
13:20.29chouimatsound fun
13:20.44TomWI am seriously looking at eliminating the parameter block, it would end up inside it's own 64k sector and that is just too precious use of the flash to waste?
13:22.20TomWI started to read the bootp code and from what I can tell, they use the parameter block to effect how the bootp loader behaves: parallel port / serial port for flash programming, boot from /dev/mtdblock or /dev/hda1, etc..
13:23.32TomWI want blob to come up, look for a compact flash and boot from it if the /boot/vmlinuz is present in the filesystem, otherwise have it boot the kernel stored within the Flash instead.
13:25.01TomWmaybe have it so you can hold down the internal pushbutton and force blob to boot the Flash kernel, this way you could initiate an ethernet connection another machine and overwrite a broken /boot/vmlinuz in the CF / IDE.
13:26.16chouimatTomW: or maybe get a bigger flash
13:26.16TomWidea is that the kernel image in the 1Meg Flash is a "recovery / setup" kernel, not a production kernel.  The production kernel would be booted from the CF.
13:26.35TomWchouimat: no
13:28.05TomWchouimat: Since this system (webpal) is a proto for an actual board to be designed later, I would like to do it in 1Meg (if possible) as the smaller Flash devices are cheaper.  Actually, if I can keep blob < 32K then I could even eliminate the Flash memory altogether and replace it with an EPROM.
13:28.37chouimatTomW: ok ...
13:28.56TomWThe whole focus of the design would be on the CF.
13:29.59TomWbut, while doing development work, using the webpal, it would be handy to have another "known good" kernel to repair stuff on the CF with.
13:30.40TomWanyway, that is the plan.  Hopefully today I can get the kernel to boot with blob.
