14:38.17fijdgetis it hard to make your own embedded Linux system?  do you need special equipment?  can you get an emulator?
14:48.53theDevil-depends
14:49.01theDevil-what skills do you have now?
14:53.26fijdgetprogramming?  not much.  mostly with linux configuration
14:53.51fijdgeti've compiled custom pacakges for different architectures like MIPS
14:54.00theDevil-ok
14:54.16theDevil-well it all depends what you want to do
14:54.33theDevil-emulators exist, but not for every architecture out there

14:56.27theDevil-hmm
14:56.39theDevil-for me it would be fairly hard
14:56.42fijdgetwhat i mean is the promise ide raid controller is an embedded version of linux software raid
14:57.04fijdgeti am wondering how they "embed" it onto the chip
14:57.37theDevil-just an eeprom?

19:09.14Russ|werkI have trouble finding a domain I want
19:09.20Russ|werkI was thinking of surplusruss.org
19:11.27anderseeRuss|werk: hehe
19:11.43anderseeRuss|werk: yeah, one of these days I should teach it to combine emails...
19:11.53Russ|werkandersee: you getting paid to hack uclibc right now?
19:11.55anderseeRuss|werk: anyway, yeah, I had a very busy night.
19:12.34anderseeRuss|werk: yup, I've got a generous sponsor
19:13.22Russ|werkI have an offer to make the software that runs a doctors office, incorporating existing open source applications
19:14.19Russ|werkseems like a pretty serious undertaking, especially considering they want a somewhat working model by april
19:15.44anderseeRuss|werk: sounds like as much fun as writing accouts receivable...  Hope they pay a lot.  :)
19:18.21Russ|werkandersee: the average cost per office of a medical software package is $50k
19:19.13Russ|werkthe other job is through his brother doing software for wafer manufacturing robots, but I haven't heard anything about that, and I don't know how to tactfully check up on that
19:22.57CosmicPenguinkergoth: you used any 802.11B CF cards with your Z?
19:23.56kergothCosmicPenguin: yep, i've used the old dlink prism2, and a newer smc prism2.5.. others have tested other cards
19:23.58kergothCosmicPenguin: why do you ask?
19:24.12CosmicPenguinkergoth: looking at a Linksys
19:24.24CosmicPenguinWCF11
19:24.53kergothCosmicPenguin: be advised the WCF11 is physically large and will likely block headphone and/or stylus

19:27.24anderseekergoth: so which CF 802.11b card is best?
19:29.20kergoth'best' is a matter of opinion.  the Symbol/Socket cards (spectrum_cs, the prism2 based that require firmware download on card init) are the lowest power, and are often recommended.  Though the range is sacrificed as a result.  Then there's the prism2.5 cards.. smc, netgear, et cetera, which are physically a good size, and work just fine.  I wouldnt recommend any of the prism2 cards, as they're physically huge, and in my experience th

22:38.38MonMothaI don't think it's supposed to get so hot it almost burns your finger when you touch it?
22:40.31CosmicPenguinMonMotha: 5V != 3.3V... :P
22:40.43MonMothathis is a 232, it uses 5V

22:40.49MonMothaI'm not using a 3232
22:42.14MonMothahum, I don't know why it would do that
22:43.53MonMothaon the upside, it's cold as hell here (my temp thingie says 7 F), so I guess I have another space heater

22:44.10MonMotha:)
22:44.24MonMothaanyone ever had this happen?
22:44.55MonMothaI guess I don't have anything hooked up to the RS-232 side, but I assume it's designed to handle that
22:46.58CosmicPenguinMonMotha: sorry - most of the hardware intellegent folks have gone missing
23:33.22sieveMonMotha: I don't know much about the hardware end of things either but I do know that the serial board for my webpal does not get hot at all...
23:36.11sieveI used the bigbird diagram for my webpal board, and if I remember correctly there is something odd about his serial port on the diagram..  I remember having to cross wire it or something.
